Round table conference’23 – Green & Climate Resilient Housing needs in Pakistan

The PMRC (Pakistan Mortgage Refinance Company) has successfully convened a prestigious round table conference on September 5th,2023 dedicated to the exploration of Sustainable, Green, and Climate Resilient Housing in Pakistan. The event drew together a diverse assembly of speakers, each representing distinct backgrounds and expertise, to offer profound insights and comprehensive knowledge on this vital subject matter.

 

During the conference, significant attention was directed toward several key themes, notably Sustainable Urban Development within Emerging Markets, the Social Impact and Affordability of housing projects emphasizing sustainability, as well as the crucial aspect of funding. Distinguished professionals hailing from the banking sector, Housing Finance Companies (HFCs), Microfinance institutions, and Development Financial Institutions (DFIs) actively participated in the conference. Their participation was instrumental in contributing invaluable perspectives and strategies aimed at fostering the proliferation of green housing projects in Pakistan, with a specific focus on enhancing accessibility within the market.

PMRC held a successful Round Table Conference for Partner Financial Institutions (PFIs) on June 22, 2023. The conference was attended by “Habib Bank Limited”, “Bank Alfalah”, “Faysal Bank”, “Bank of Punjab”, and “JS Bank Limited”. The conference aimed to explore innovative products development for the housing finance market. PMRC’s Business team presented exciting new products with great potential to enhance the housing finance sector. New products included “Reverse Mortgage” and “100% LTV Mortgage”

 

Participants engaged in productive discussions, examining feasibility and brainstorming strategies to overcome challenges. The consensus among attendees was that these new products would make a significant contribution, expanding the market for mortgage finance and housing loans. The conference served as a valuable platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange among participants, showcasing PMRC’s commitment to promoting growth and addressing industry needs.

Mudassir H. Khan (MD/CEO PMRC) attended the Global Affordable Housing Conference organized by World Bank Group from May 31- June 2, 2023 at the World Bank Group Headquarters in Washington D.C. The theme of the conference was “Looking ahead: unlocking access to affordable, green and resilient housing through innovation.” The 3-day hybrid event brought together an audience of entrepreneurs, financiers, policy makers, researchers and development partners to discuss innovative ideas and cutting-edge solutions to build and finance affordable and green housing around the world.

First International Housing Expo 2022

PMRC delegates participated in International Housing Expo 2022, held at Jinnah Convention Centre, Islamabad from 8th to 11th December 2022. Expo was organized by The Ministry of Housing & Works with an objectives of promotion of urban regeneration schemes, gentrification of federal government land, management of rapid urbanization, providing common platform to resolve intricate urban and national issues, development of national urban infrastructure to support urban and regional development, and promotion of affordable green housing for all.

Mudassir H Khan (MD/CEO) PMRC at MENA Housing Forum 2022

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Housing Forum 2022

Mudassir H Khan (MD/CEO) PMRC participated as a speaker in The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Housing Forum 2022 held in Cairo, Egypt from November 21 to 23. The MENA Housing Forum is part of a global series of Housing Forums organized by Habitat for Humanity in collaboration with partner organizations in different regions of the world. Speaking at the forum Mr. Khan represented Pakistan and shared his views on challenges and lessons of sustainable finance for resilient low cost and affordable housing. He also shared PMRC’s experience and contribution in growth of Pakistan’s housing finance market.

Session on The Future of Microfinance: Converting Crisis into Opportunities – Housing, MSE, Education, Digital Banks & Nano Credit at Annual Microfinance Conference (AMC-6)

Mudassir H. Khan moderating session on The Future of Microfinance: Converting Crisis into Opportunities – Housing, MSE, Education, Digital Banks & Nano Credit at Annual Microfinance Conference(AMC-6)  at SERENA Hotel, ISB. The primary objective of the conference is to unveil the performance and achievement of the microfinance sector in the last 20 years and the crucial role it plays in financial inclusion poverty reduction and sustainable development of local communities.

World Islamic Finance Forum

PMRC was invited by IBA to present Islamic products at the World Islamic Finance Forum held on 31st May 2022 in Karachi. The participants showed keen interest in the innovative structures of PMRCs refinancing products as well as Risk Sharing Facility and Sukuk. The participants appreciated the role of PMRC in the development of low-cost mortgage markets and fixed-rate capital markets.

IFC – Housing Finance Webinar

Mr. Mudassir H. Khan participated in the IFC – Housing Finance Webinar held on 21 September 2021. The webinar session briefed the participants on assessment of target customer segmentation catered towards housing finance needs for low & middle-income segments in Pakistan.

Mr. Mudassir shared his valuable insight on market potential and available opportunities of housing finance in the country. During the Q/A session, he enlightened the participants about PMRC’s critical role in the industry along with its experience in enabling housing finance accessible and affordable for low & middle-income groups

Annual Microfinance Conference 2021

Mr. Mudassir H. Khan, Managing Director/CEO, PMC participated in the Annual Microfinance conference 2021, organized by the Pakistan Microfinance Networks. The objective of the conference was to provide a platform to all stakeholders such as microfinance providers, financial service providers involved in financial inclusion (like banks, digital financial service providers, FinTechs, and insurance companies), donor agencies, policymakers, regulators, development agencies and government authorities to discuss ways to broaden the horizons of the microfinance industry.

Mr. Mudassir shared his views in the conference regarding the new funding paradigm for Microfinance Industry.

PMRC hosted a Mortgage Insurance session

PMRC hosted a session on August 12, 2020 with participants from major Insurance Companies of Pakistan along with representatives from Banks. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss Mortgage/housing related insurance products that are currently available in the market and products that are internationally available but not offered in Pakistan.  Thus the session was aimed at strengthening the mortgage market in Pakistan by offering new insurance product that provide insurance cover in case of temporary loss of income which can be due to partial disability, job loss etc. to the mortgagees specially for the low income segment which is a vulnerable segment to absorb the economic shocks.

Session was chaired by Mr. Mudassir.H.Khan, CEO PMRC and attended by senior management officials of PMRC, Habib Bank Limited, United Bank Limited, National Bank of Pakistan, M/s. EFU Insurance Company, Adamjee Insurance Company, IGI Insurance Company, Jubilee Insurance Company, Atlas Insurance Company, TPL Insurance Company and Unique Insurance Brokers.

Mr. Mudassir said that the product will not only give PMLs the required confidence in the housing sector but will also serve as a medium to safeguard the end consumer from risk of default. Attendees appreciated PMRC’s proposal and said that besides adding a new product to insurance sector, it will play a vital role in development of housing finance market which will facilitate Government’s efforts in fostering the housing sector.

As an outcome, a committee comprising of insurance industry experts and bank officials has now been formulated which will come up with a product to cater the need of the market.
